Barely four months after it was opened, Accessibleweb Yahoo e-group has grown to a total of 23 members with more than 250 messages posted and discussed from the numerous topics ranging from web accessibility to current issues on disability.
Owned and moderated by PWAG administrator Rey Mendoza, the e-group members mostly came from those who attended the 1st Regional Workshop on Accessible ICT held in Tagaytay City last October 2004. However, webmasters from other government web sites, disabled sector, academic institutions and international organizations also joined in the e-group. Visit the Yahoo discussion group at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/accessibleweb/.
PWAG quietly launched its first edition web site to cyberspace. This simple site aims to integrate all the vital information regarding the group and at the same time archive its important announcements and related activities with partner agencies.
However, pwag.org is not designed as a blog site. Members will continue to use the Accessibleweb Yahoo E-group for all exchanges of information, comments, suggestions, discussions and up-to-the-minute announcements.
PWAG has evaluated and certified accessible the official web site of the Department of Labor and Employment - Bureau of Local Employment. Their Web development team led by Jerry Abordo renovated their web site and passed the group's accessibility recommendations. They are now the second government web site that is disabled friendly after the House of Representatives. Congratulations Jerry!
PWAG has evaluated and certified accessible the official web site of Emilio Aguinaldo College. Web designer Santiago "Sonny" Villafania and EAC Web Development Team again renovated their web site and passed the group's accessibility recommendations. Congratulations Sonny!
PWAG had an initial talk with Mr. Ibarra Gutierrez, Editor-in-chief of Media G8way Corp regarding the possible inclusion of Disabled Friendly Website awards in the 10th staging of Philippine Web Awards (PWA) next year. Media G8way Corp publishes PC World, Computerworld and IT Resource computer magazines and is responsible for PWA.
Upon Media G8way's invitation, PWAG core group members attended the 9th Philippine Web Awards last December 7 at RCBC Auditorium and saw how the awarding ceremony was being done.
Philippine Web Awards is an award-giving body that annually recognizes the best Filipino-created Web sites and honors the individuals and teams behind them. PWA is the local version of the American Webby Awards. Web sites from the big corporate world, academe, government and media participate in this activity. With this potentially huge exposure, PWAG recommends that the Disabled Friendly Web Site award will initially be included as a special recognition in 2007 to increase the people's awareness.
PWAG has evaluated and certified partially accessible the official web site of Nova Foundation for the Differently Abled. Deaf web designer Gimar Aguilon singlehandedly renovated their web site and partially passed the group's accessibility recommendations pending further changes in the web site.
The problems that need to be removed as per evaluation of PWAG resident evaluator Lourdes Borgonia include typo errors, "click here" link, duplicated link text, "Read more" link is pointed into different addresses and flash file is inaccessible to a screen reader user because the cursor also animates anywhere within the page. Congratulations Gimar!
PWAG represented by core group members' Lemuel Cabia and Jojo Esposa presented the list of activities and accomplishments during the regular ICT Sub-committee meeting held at Sir Noli Agcaoili's Residence last Thursday, November 29, 2006.
The Sub-committee on ICT is under the National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons (NCWDP). Members of this committee who also attended the meeting include government agencies representatives from Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the National Vocational Rehabilitation Center (NVRC). Other non-government organizations who participated were ATRIEV, Akap Pinoy, Nova Foundation and MCCID. Mr. Noli Agcaoili is also the president of Nova Foundation.
The committee was impressed by the many achievements of the group in spite of being established only last August. PWAG is the newest member of the said ICT sub-committee.
After a series of discussion in the e-group forum and based on the combined access keys used by the designers of four member sites, PWAG has approved the recommended accessibility checklist and accesskey assignments for Philippine owned and designed web sites.
The recommendations have been submitted to the partner agencies for further discussions. Afterwards, these will become the official Philippine recommended web accessibility standards. To view the recommendations, go to http://www.pwag.org/recommendations.htm.
PWAG has evaluated and certified accessible the official web site of Medical Center Manila. Web designer Santiago "Sonny" Villafania and EAC Web Development Team renovated their web site and passed the group's accessibility recommendations. Congratulations Sonny!
The UK based international Guild of Accesible Web Designers (GAWDS) recognize the efforts of Philippine Web Accessibility Group by placing a news item on their official web site.
