Population Commission conducts web accessibility training

The Commission on Population conducted Web Development Training for their Regional MIS Personnel last September 10-15, 2018 at Golden Prince Hotel and Suites, Cebu City.

Dubbed “Web Development Training using the Portal Content Management System and In-depth Training on Web Accessibility for Commission on Population”, the regional participants aimed to re-design their websites to conform with the government prescribed standards using the Government Web Template (GWT) as well as comply with Memo Circular No. 4  or the Web Content Accessibility Guideline No. 2.

More than thirty participants representing all the regions including the head office attended the training/workshop. This activity is part of their initiative of “providing accessible information to the public including persons with special needs who also plays an important role in the society and the use of technology in giving fast and ease of access to information.”

On the first three days, Mr. Donnel Ivan Alfonso, Officer of the Information Technology and Data Management Unit of PopCom gave a hands-on/workshop on using the Government Web Template focusing on WordPress Content Management System. PWAG President Jojo Esposa Jr. was the resource speaker on the last two days. He explained about the salient features of WCAG 2.0 as well as expanding on the individual points of the guideline.

As their final output, the participants were grouped according to their regions and came up with draft revisions of their regional websites utilizing the lessons that they learned from the past four-day lectures.

The Commission on Population is a national government agency tasked to implement Republic Act 10354 or the “Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012. The law aims to empower the Filipino people, especially women and youth, through informed choice and age- and development- appropriate education. Further, the law guarantees access to information, facilities and services most especially for the poor by ensuring stable and sustainable reproductive health programs are in place through partnerships between national and local governments in collaboration with CSOs, basic sectors, academe and private sector.

PopCom is currently headed by Executive Director Juan Antonio A. Perez III, MD, MPH.
